How Big Tech is Taking Over American Politics
The role of tech and social media giants in the 2024 Race
Is Silicon Valley Hacking the 2024 Election?
The lines between Silicon Valley and Washington D.C. are blurring.
Tech giants and social media platforms are emerging as new kingmakers in American politics.
They use algorithms and user data as weapons of choice to control narratives.
Good Morning. Starting this week, we'll cover one major policy issue each week. We'll analyze where each candidate - Trump, Kamala, and RFK Jr. - stands on it.
This week we’re covering how tech and social media giants are shaping American politics and the 2024 US Presidential race.

TikTok’s Invisible Hand
TikTok, the Chinese-owned app, is at the center of a political controversy. It is due to its data collection and content promotion practices:
TikTok is collecting data on users' views on sensitive topics like abortion and gun control.
The app uses an internal system, Lark, to gather this info. This raises national security concerns.
TikTok can boost specific videos through "heating" to shape discussions on important issues.
This power could sway public opinion on issues vital to the 2024 election.
TikTok's influence could affect political trends and voter behavior, beyond just individual users.
TikTok will pick one favorite one day, and turn its back on them the next day. The bottom line is: thank goodness for the TikTok bill. This is a reminder that it’s not about who’s *on* TikTok, it’s about who *controls* TikTok. And the CCP’s control needs to be removed.

Google's Search Suppression Scandal
Several X users highlighted that Google's autocomplete failed to suggest info on the July 13 incident in Butler, Pennsylvania.
But It did suggest historical assassination attempts on figures like Ronald Reagan and John F. Kennedy.
This led to widespread claims of bias and election interference from Trump supporters.
Google says it has safeguards against suggestions for political violence. But, many remain skeptical.
This controversy highlights the immense power of search engines. They control access to information and shape public perception.
Why is @Google suppressing the search about the Trump assassination attempt? These are all screenshots from this morning. Has there been a dramatic increase in Truman biographers in the last two weeks?
I’ll be making an official inquiry into @Google this week - I look forward… x.com/i/web/status/1…

Meta's Political Pivot
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has a new approach to managing political content on its platforms:
Meta has reduced the visibility of political content across its platforms.
Users now have to opt-in to see political posts in their feeds.
Critics say this move may limit key political debates in an election year.
Meta says this approach is based on user preferences. But, it raises questions about social media's role in facilitating political discourse, especially in an election year.

The Billionaire Backstage: Tech Moguls Funding the 2024 Race
Behind the scenes, tech billionaires are playing big in funding political campaigns. Their financial contributions could have a major impact on the election's outcome.
Trump's Silicon Valley Surge
Despite previous tensions with Silicon Valley, Trump's 2024 campaign has seen an influx of support from tech leaders:
Elon Musk: The Tesla and SpaceX CEO has pledged a staggering $45 million per month to a Trump-aligned super PAC, America PAC.
Peter Thiel: While not committing to a specific amount, Thiel's influence remains significant, particularly in Trump's selection of J.D. Vance as his running mate.
David Sacks, Marc Andreessen, Ben Horowitz: These tech giants are all donating to America PAC, but the amounts are undisclosed.
Joe Lonsdale, Cameron, and Tyler Winklevoss: Cryptocurrency moguls throwing their support behind Trump.
This support is mainly driven by economic interests and a desire for deregulation. There are also concerns about the Biden-Kamala administration's approach to cryptocurrency and innovation.
Tech Titans Behind Kamala
On the Democratic side, Vice President Kamala Harris has gained support from powerful tech figures. This follows President Biden's decision not to seek reelection:
Sheryl Sandberg: The former Meta COO has publicly endorsed Harris.
Reid Hoffman: The LinkedIn co-founder called Harris the "right person at the right time."
Vinod Khosla: Initially hesitant, the venture capitalist has shifted to support Harris.
Reed Hastings: The Netflix co-founder committed $7 million to a super PAC supporting Harris.
George Soros and Alex Soros: Both have endorsed Harris, though exact donation amounts are undisclosed.
So Alex Soros donates hundreds of millions to Kamala and Elon Musk donates hundreds of millions to Trump. This is called an Oligarchy, not a Democracy. Let's ban all lobbying from corporations and foreign nations and limit individual donations to $50 max per candidate.

Our Thoughts
The 2024 Presidential Race is set to be a defining moment, not just for the candidates but for the role of technology in democracy.
Tech x politics poses new challenges and opportunities for democracy, with issues like content moderation, campaign financing, data privacy, and foreign interference.
As citizens and voters, staying informed and critically evaluating the information we consume online has never been more crucial.

Why is it that being a centrist means you’re a spineless cuck
Just because you can criticize or praise either side doesn’t mean you’re without values
How brainwashed do you need to be to blindly support one side over and over again without thought?
