Here are the key takeaways from the debate
The First Presidential Debate: What You Need to Know
President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump's first presidential debate just ended in Atlanta, Georgia.
CNN hosted it with Jake Tapper and Dana Bash as the debate's moderators.
The 90-minute debate was filled with intense exchanges, which were mostly personal attacks.
Here are the top moments and takeaways from the debate:
The debate kicked off with a heated exchange on the economy.
Economy and Inflation
Biden emphasized inheriting a struggling economy from Trump.
Trump opened with a bold statement, saying that the U.S. had “the greatest economy economy in history” during his presidency.
He blamed the economic downturn only on the pandemic.
Biden countered by highlighting the economic recovery under his administration.
Biden also accused Trump of neglecting the middle class. He said Trump prioritized the wealthy with his tax cuts.
Abortion Rights
Trump supported the recent Supreme Court decision on abortion medication, framing it as a victory for states' rights and individual freedoms.
Biden argued for women’s autonomy in healthcare decisions.
Immigration and Border Security
Trump criticized the Biden administration's handling of immigration. He described the situation at the southern border as a "disaster."
He pointed to the rise in illegal crossings. He accused Biden of having an open borders policy that compromises national security.
Biden defended his administration's approach.
“We have the largest number of terrorists coming into our country right now. All terrorists all over the world, not just in South America, all over the world. They come from the Middle East, everywhere, all over the world. They’re pouring in. And this guy just left it open.“
Foreign Policy and Ukraine
Biden called Russian President Vladimir Putin a “war criminal”. He restated the U.S.'s commitment to help Ukraine against Russian aggression.
Trump expressed doubt about U.S. aid to Ukraine. He suggested that Europe should do more.
Personal Attacks and Character Questioning
Personal attacks and questioning each other’s characters were a top highlight of the debate:
Biden did not hold back and called Trump “the worst president in American history”.
He also brought up Trump's recent felony. He questioned Trump’s morals and fitness for office.
Trump fired back. He questioned Biden’s cognitive abilities.
“And our – those who he cuddles up to, from Kim Jong-un who he sends love letters to, or Putin, et cetera, they don’t want to screw around with us.“
Biden’s Struggle with Words
During the debate, Biden had many moments where he struggled with his words. This led to instances of stumbling in his responses.
Democrats made efforts to contain the damage from Biden’s verbal stumbles.
“He took none. I’d like to see him take one, just one, a real easy one. Like go through the first five questions, he couldn’t do it.“
Public Reaction and Perception
Many Democrats were disappointed with Biden's performance. They cited a lack of energy and coherence.
Some moderate Democrats even called for an alternative candidate.
VP Kamala Harris acknowledged Biden's slow start. But, she emphasized the key choice facing voters in November.

I love Joe Biden. I know he’s a good man. I know his heart is good. I know he’s dedicated to our country and is surrounded by good people. Tonight was heartbreaking in many ways. This is a big political moment. There’s panic in the Democratic party. It’s going to be a long night.

If Biden can’t handle a debate, how can he handle the most dangerous foreign policy situation since the Cuban Missile Crisis? It’s time to pull back from the brink.

The fact that anyone is shocked by Biden’s brain-dead performance tonight is a scathing indictment of the media which has gone to great lengths to cover this fact up for the public.
