Vance vs Walz: The Battle for Second-in-Command
On October 1, 2024, JD Vance and Tim Walz took the stage for their first and only vice-presidential debate, just weeks before the election.
The debate offered a glimpse into two contrasting visions for America and provided a critical moment in the race.
Their recent debate showcased not only their diverse backgrounds but also their contrasting political stances and ideologies.
How the Unlikely Contenders Became VP Picks
This is the only VP debate I have ever seen that didn’t feel like a waste of time. Walz is nervous, forgets his lines sometimes, but is better than I expected. But Vance is in his own league, just a huge talent. He won hands down.

Tim Walz: Harris’s Progressive Choice
Tim Walz has had a long career in public service. His commitment to education, progressive reforms, and crisis management made him Harris’s top choice.
A Midwest Upbringing:
Born in 1964 in West Point, Nebraska
Raised in a middle-class family, father a public school administrator, mother a community activist
Early exposure to public service and community engagement
Military Man to Education Advocate:
24 years in the Army National Guard, retiring as Command Sergeant Major
Taught high school in China before returning to teach and coach in Minnesota
Combines military discipline with educational expertise
Political Rise:
Six-term U.S. Representative for Minnesota's First Congressional District (2007-2019)
Elected Governor of Minnesota in 2018, re-elected in 2022
Known for progressive policies like free school meals and expanded child tax credits
With his extensive experience, Walz’s presence on the ticket solidifies Harris’s appeal to progressives while also providing a reassuring figure for moderates.

JD Vance: The Outsider Turned Insider
JD Vance’s rise from author of Hillbilly Elegy to U.S. Senator and now vice-presidential candidate reflects the broader transformation of the Republican Party under Donald Trump.
Vance’s political journey, from Trump critic to staunch ally, makes him a key figure in mobilizing the party’s base.
From “Hillbilly“ to Yale:
Born in 1984 in Middletown, Ohio
Raised in a working-class family, experiences detailed in "Hillbilly Elegy"
Overcame challenging childhood to attend Ohio State and Yale Law School
Marine to Memoirist:
Served in the U.S. Marines (2003-2007) as a public affairs officer in Iraq
Gained national attention with his memoir, exploring themes of poverty and social mobility
Transitioned from venture capitalist to political figure
Political Transformation:
Initially critical of Donald Trump, later aligned with his Conservative agenda
Elected to the U.S. Senate from Ohio in 2022
Advocates for traditional conservative values and economic nationalism
Vance’s role is clear: galvanize Trump’s core supporters and maintain the populist message that has defined the GOP in recent years, even if it risks alienating moderates.
WOW! Tim Walz just asked J.D. Vance straight up if Trump lost the 2020 election and Vance refused to answer.
This is the clip that will be replayed over and over again this next week. Well played!

Policy Positions and VP Debate: Clash of Ideologies?
The first vice-presidential debate offered a stark contrast between two opposing visions for America’s future.
Moderated by CBS anchors, the debate avoided personal attacks and instead focused on key policy differences.
Economic Visions: Wall Street vs. Main Street
Vance advocates for a market-driven economy, emphasizing deregulation as a path to growth
Vance also defends Trump-era economic policies, claiming benefits for regular Americans through economic opportunity
Walz, however, supports progressive taxation and expanded social safety nets
He emphasizes a stronger government role in the economy for working-class Americans
Immigration: Open Borders vs. Border Wall
Vance took a hard stance on border security, accusing Harris of exacerbating the immigration crisis.
He also pushes for stricter border enforcement, increased deportations and supports the completion of the border wall
Walz, on the other hand, calls for a more human approach and points out the failure of Trump’s immigration policies
Climate Agenda: Green New Deal vs Fossil Fuel Freedom
Vance advocates for increased domestic oil and gas production to achieve energy independence
Contrarily, Walz favors clean energy and ambitious targets like 100% clean electricity by 2040.
Who Won the Debate?
Post-debate polling showed a nearly even split, with 42% of viewers favoring Vance (R) and 41% backing Walz (D).
Our Thoughts
As the 2024 race enters its final stretch, the VP picks are playing a key role in shaping the narratives of their respective campaigns.
But the question remains: Can they win over the undecided voters who will ultimately decide this election?
That’s why so many centrists / center-right / center-left people aren’t feeling represented
