New Transgender Rules In Alberta Causes Concern as Trudeau Condemns Proposed Rules — labels them the “most anti-LGBT” policies in the country

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has criticized the federal government’s involvement in Alberta’s transgender youth policies. He believes that parents should be trusted with making decisions regarding their best interests, with great support from conservatives across the country.

However, Justin Trudeau and many other Canadians have condemned Alberta’s proposals, with Trudeau believing they’re the “most anti-LGBT” policies in the country. Alberta's proposed rules include restrictions on transgender surgeries and hormone therapy, as well as pronoun use and sex education in schools, with parental consent required for certain changes.

How have mainstream media been judging this story?

What is the left saying?

The left highlights the potential dangers of the new policies coming into place, painting Poilievre in a negative light:

Pierre Poilievre says minors should not have access to puberty blockers

Pierre Poilievre opposes 'puberty inhibitors'

Last Wednesday, Poilievre said he doesn’t support trans kids taking puberty blockers — used to pause puberty before gender transition can take place.

"I think we should protect the rights of parents to make their own decisions with regards to their children."

These statements come after Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced plans to ban puberty blockers & hormone therapy for children 15 and younger.

“Our government will do whatever it takes to protect the most vulnerable”

Trudeau and many other Canadians believe this is a huge mistake and believe it damages the “most vulnerable” people in Canadian society.

The Alberta Medical Association released statements backing up the support of Trudeau and the LGBT community.

What is the right saying?

On the other hand, the right highlight Poilievre and Alberta’s new policies as “parental rights”:

Poilievre tells Trudeau to “butt out” on parental rights after Alberta bans sex changes for minors

Poilievre tells Trudeau to 'butt out' on Alberta's parental rights legislation

Poilievre believes the decision to change gender should be an adult decision — so up until then, the rights belong to the parents of the children.

"I think we should protect children and their ability to make adult decisions — when they are adults."

Additionally, the right highlighted Poilievre saying reporters and Trudeau are peddling “disinformation to demonize” the Premier of Alberta, Danielle Smith.

“Butt out”

This comes down to a province vs country-wide decision. Poilievre believes school and medical practices should be province-run, meaning Trudeau has no authority in the province.

Should the government get involved or should this be left to a province-only decision?

Let’s Seek Common Ground, What Are The Facts?

  • Premier of Alberta Danielle Smith proposed rules that include restrictions on transgender — most notably the plan to ban puberty blockers & hormone therapy

  • Trudeau and the Alberta Medical Association amongst others have condemned these policies, as they damage the right of gender-diverse youth

  • Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has backed Premier Smith, claiming Trudeau should “butt out” as it is a province matter — not a federal one
