TikTok CEO Labelled a Communist By Republican Senator, As Social Media Executives Testify at Hearing on Child Safety

Last week, chief executives of 5 major social media companies found themselves before senators regarding “Big Tech and the Online Child Exploitation Crisis”. This comes after parents are left outraged across the country, as children have been exposed to many unsafe scenarios. But how have mainstream media been reporting on this?

What is the left saying?

On both the left and the right, there was an obvious focus on the hearing:

Lawmakers grilled the CEOs of top social media companies in a hearing today

Mark Zuckerberg apologizes to families over social media harms in contentious Senate hearing

CEOs of Meta, TikTok, X, Snap and Discord were ripped apart.

Meta (the parent company of Facebook and Instagram) has largely been the focus of this hearing — they’re sued for failing to protect children from online predators and addicting children to the platforms.

Here’s a video of Mark Zuckerberg’s apology:

Many believed the apologies from each CEO “lacked heart”:

“It lacked heart… I think he could have done better in his (Evan Spiegel, CEO of Snap) apology to us.”

“I just feel like for them, our children are just casualties, pawns, in this game to make money”

Tom Cotton grills Singaporean TikTok CEO: Are you a Chinese Communist?

Another moment from the hearing went viral, as Republican Senator Tom Cotton accused the Singaporean TikTok CEO if he was a Chinese Communist.

Here’s a video of that very moment:

Although Senator Cotton talked mainly about the harm TikTok has done for many Americans across the country, he was adamant that Chew (TikTok CEO) was influenced and even part of the Chinese Communist part.

What is the right saying?

Again, the right highlighted the hearing’s importance

Social media CEOs grilled by US senators at child safety hearing

Parents, children’s advocates and lawmakers all day that companies aren’t doing enough to protect them.

And with young people facing a wide range of issues, it’s no surprise people want action.

“Sexual predators. Addictive features. Suicide and eating disorders. Unrealistic beauty standards. Bullying. These are just some of the issues young people are dealing with on social media”

Meghan Markle, Prince Harry demand change to reduce cyberbullying: 'We all want to feel safe'

Many on the right also highlighted that Prince Harry & Megan Markle spoke out against these big social media companies.

The couple have previously faced an immense amount of online abuse, from racism to conspiracy theories.

They praised parents for advocating for substantial change and supporting them in their fight to change the way social media companies handle children’s online safety.

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have warned that “the best parenting in the world” cannot keep children safe from social media.”
