So…what does this mean for the upcoming 2024 election?
Donald Trump is convicted in the hush money payment case. He is guilty on 34 felony charges for covering up hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels. This makes Trump the first president ever to be convicted of a crime. But this raises the question of whether he can still run for president. It is unclear if he will be sent to prison. This adds more uncertainty to the November election.
How has mainstream media been covering this story?
What is the left saying? Many on the left support Trump’s conviction. They view it as accountability for his actions and a victory for the rule of law. The sentences for falsifying business records go from zero to max four years in jail, says Dan Horwitz, a defense lawyer who previously prosecuted White collar cases. “The judge could sentnece him to anything between zero and the max…he could sentence him to a sentence where he is required to go to jail every weekend for a period of time and then serve the rest of the sentence on probation“ It’s worth noting that there are no legal restrictions that can make Trump ineligible to run for president. The Biden campaign may have found a new weapon to target Trump by labeling him a convicted felon. But Kabir Khanna, CBS News’s deputy director of elections and data analytics, says the conviction and likely sentence would not hurt Trump’s poll numbers by much. “Together, these factors could blunt the impact of the verdict on the views of already divided public. Some voters may be swayed by the news, but I wouldn’t expect a sea change.“ It remains unclear if Trump will be sentenced to prison on July 11. But the left believes Trump’s conviction is justified and necessary for the “fascist“ former president. | What is the right saying? The right is criticizing Trump’s conviction. They argue it as a weaponization of the legal system against political opponents. Justice Merchan could sentence Trump to up to four years in prison. But it is highly unlikely. According to Syracuse law professor Gregory Germain, it would be an extraordinary thing to sentence Trump to prison, for first-time felony charges that are non-violent. Germain says that sentencing Trump to prison would make Justice Merchan look biased. “In the real world, if this was not Trump… I think there’s basically zero chance that they would send this person to prison.“ It would “create an incredible constitutional crisis in the middle of an election.“ Trump’s conviction is turning out to be a big boost to the Trump campaign. In the first 24 hours since the verdict was announced, the Trump campaign raised a record $53 million. The Trump campaign said that over one-third of donors are new. Trump seems to be unfazed by the verdict and is pushing his campaign with new motivation. “The real verdict is going to be Nov. 5, by the people. We’ll keep fighting, we’ll fight to the end, and we’ll win.“ Besides the increase in donations, it is not known how the conviction is helping the Trump campaign. But the right strongly believes it to be the case of politicization of the legal system. |
Let’s Seek Common Ground, What Are The Facts?
Trump was found guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records over hush money payments to Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.
The sentence could range from no jail time to up to four years in prison.
It’s the first-ever criminal conviction for a former U.S. President.
He can still run for president and serve in office, as there is no constitutional disqualification for people with convictions or in prison.
Our Thoughts
Trump’s conviction is a historic moment in American politics. It highlights the importance of accountability for those in the highest positions of power. At the same time, it also shows how judicial power could be misused for politics. We don’t yet know if Trump will be sentenced to prison. We also don't know how it would impact his political future and the 2024 election. But it does set a dangerous precedent for mixing law and politics in the United States.
