Vatican Labels Gender-Affirming Surgery "Grave Threat to Human Dignity"

The Vatican has released a doctrinal document called “Dignitas Infinita” or "Infinite Dignity," developed over five years, addressing various aspects of human dignity. Most notably, the Vatican repeatedly rejects gender theory & gender-affirming surgeries — although Pope Francis condemns the criminalization of homosexuality.

But what do people across the political spectrum think of this?

What is the left saying?

Many on the left were concerned with the Pope’s comments:

Vatican calls
gender fluidity
and surrogacy threats to human dignity

Advocates for LGBTQ+ Catholics criticized the document’s outdated views on trans people.

They warned it could have real-world effects on trans-identifying individuals, including anti-trans violence.

“While it lays out a wonderful rationale for why each human being, regardless of condition in life, must be respected, honored, and loved, it does not apply this principle to gender-diverse people,”

And many more people from all over the world agreed with DeBernardo’s statement — England, Germany & Canada.

The White House also weighed in but was more understanding of the situation and believed the overall message protects LGBTQ+ individuals.

“Furthers the Vatican’s call to ensure that LGBTQ+ (individuals) are protected from violence and imprisonment around the world,”

But what do people on the right think of all this?

What is the right saying?

But people on the right felt more aligned with Pope’s comments:

Vatican says gender theory, surrogacy violate human dignity in ethics document

Conservative bishops worldwide were apprehensive about the document's contents, because of previous controversy where Pope Francis allowed priests to bless same-sex marriages.

And many Conservative leaders in America gave Pope Francis a fierce warning:

“if Francis did not stick to doctrine, he could provoke a permanent split within the church”

Many conservatives approved of the document's views of gender theory — reaffirming the Catholic Church’s view that the gender you are given is a gift and shouldn’t be changed.

"Regarding gender theory, whose scientific coherence is the subject of considerable debate among experts, the Church recalls that human life in all its dimensions, both physical and spiritual, is a gift from God,"

The document also reaffirms the Church’s teachings on abortion, further elaborating on criticisms regarding surrogate pregnancies.

Let’s Seek Common Ground, What Are The Facts?

  • The Vatican rejects gender theory & gender-affirming care

  • Additionally, views on abortion, IVF and many other topics remain consistent with the Catholic Church

  • However, Pope Francis says that priests can bless same-sex marraige
